The Graduate Program in Economics has two objectives: to give students the skills needed to engage in independent research in the future and to train professionals equipped with the knowledge to engage in highly specialized fields of work. Measures to achieve these goals include a diversity of classes, a separate admissions process for non-traditional students, and a selection of night classes. The curriculum is adjusted continuously in response to changing economic realities. In light of the trend toward computerization and other social transformations, recent resources have been devoted to the fields of information and public economics. Students may also take classes at eight affiliated universities. Here at Meiji Gakuin University, both lecture and seminar classes are intensive, providing an excellent setting for the study of advanced economic theory. Both Japan and other countries have faced many problems related to the economy and finance in recent years. Through the extensive application of theoretical, institutional, and historical knowledge, as well as through empirical analysis, students in the program develop the ability to understand these problems and come up with solutions. As a consequence, they also become capable of writing academic papers with real-world relevance. Phrased differently, the department is committed to nurturing our students' ability to recognize and solve problems not only through the application of knowledge but also by analyzing institutions and empirical evidence. The program is aimed both at fostering insightful scholars and educators with specialized as well as broad knowledge, and at contributing to the education of life-long learners and working students seeking to take the next step in their careers. -

Aiming to solve the various problems related to global environmental change, the management of marine life and submarine resources and shallow water environmental preservation, the importance of oceanographic observation and marine bioprospecting is increasing more and more. On the other hand, there is an increasing number of researchers who get involved solely in existing data analysis and theoretical research, without having any field experience, a fact that also raises concern about the negative effect of missing important discoveries. These are difficult to achieve by researchers who don't have the experience in observation and research by ship, indispensable especially in ocean field research. In this program, taking advantage of the characteristic feature of this university, which is having a training ship, through training in observation and research not only along the coast but also in the ocean, through practice and internships on the research ship, opportunities to participate in observation and research in the marine field are created for students enrolled in the Master's and Doctoral Course, who aim at various research fields. Thanks to this, while making them aware of the meaning of field research, they acquire a wide-range of knowledge and advanced skills, and the program aims at fostering ship engineers and researchers who are able to perform well in international collaborative research. -

The history of Meiji Gakuin University's undergraduate Department of Social Work reaches back 90 years, while the Graduate Program in Social Work has a history of more than 50 years. In order to respond fully to Japan's social-work-related needs in the 21st century, the Graduate Program has revised its curriculum. The master's program offers a diverse range of lecture classes that match student interests and foster their ability to respond to contemporary social welfare issues. The doctoral program focuses on developing independent research ability and advanced practical skills through guidance in writing a doctoral dissertation. The program participates in a credit transfer system with 13 graduate schools in the Tokyo metropolitan area offering master's degrees in social work, enabling students to take classes at any of these schools. Both the master's and doctoral programs have systems supporting recurrent education and welcome non-traditional students. -

Yokohama, where our graduate program was established in 1990, is a port which promoted new engagement with the world at the end of the Edo period. Dr. James Hepburn built the foundation of Meiji Gakuin University here in Yokohama. The spirit of the university is to search for truth going beyond national borders, to act not just for personal profit but for the good of all, and to contribute to the world. Our graduate program has been striving to inherit this Meiji Gakuin spirit. Today, humankind is facing various global-scale problems and respective issues related to local communities. In order to cope with these challenges, scholars are in great need of both new networks with non-academic practical workers and transdisciplinary frameworks that would cut across conventional academic fields. The Graduate Program in International Studies strives to serve people who wish to devote themselves to this intellectual pursuit. The curriculum does not conform to conventional academic frameworks but rather centers around three main pillars: Japanese and Asian Studies, Peace Studies, and International Community Studies. Graduate students deepen their study of a chosen field through focused individual guidance from the professor who will serve as a chief examiner on their thesis, but may also take classes in different fields or receive guidance from other professors. In addition, the program has established a system for admitting people from various backgrounds who wish to pursue in-depth study of a subject related to their area of professional or non-academic experience, thereby opening the doors of the graduate school to motivated members of the community, regardless of their nationalities, with a desire to continue lifelong learning. We welcome applications from all individuals who want to join our Yokohama community in the pursuit of open-hearted learning. -

The oceans play an important role in global environmental change, therefore, in order to understand and predict such change, the maintenance of global-scale observation systems is needed. Also, while considering the preservation of the entire ecosystem and prevention of environmental pollution, and in order to also ensure the continuous usage of marine resources, the investigation of the oceans' biotic resources is indispensable. In this pioneering marine field, it is imperative to train and secure human resources that can actively play an international role in both science and technology. -
